Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1710

This specimen was lot 1710 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV double louis d'or au bandeau, 1742 A, Paris. Deuxième semestre. La première année de frappe du type. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare. Légère trace d'ajustage au revers. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the ribbon of 1742, Paris mint, second semester, the first year of the type. Obverse: head left, hair tied with a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Rare, slight adjustment marks on the reverse. Extremely Fine.)"

This is a better date of the double louis d'or au bandeau, of a type struck 1740-74. The Strasbourg mint struck large numbers of this denomination to support French army operations in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession; the Paris mint was only an intermittent producer.

Reported Mintage: 16,073, a slightly better date.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers; this specimen 16,32 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-463, Dr/4 № 792, KM 519.1, Dupl. 1642; Gad-346.
