Sincona sale 46, lot 359

This specimen was lot 359 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$960 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. Louis dor au bandeau 1742 W, Lille. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or of the hair ribbon of 1742, Lille mint. About extremely fine.)"

The louis d'or au bandeau was struck 1740-74 and is the commonest gold coin of Louis XV after the louis d'or aux lunettes of 1726-40. This product of the Lille mint is noted as common.

Reported Mintage: 69,750, common for 1742.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers; this specimen 8.18 g.
