Mongolia (1925) 50 mongo
The first specimen was lot 72410 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "MONGOLIA. 50 Mongo, AH 15 (1925). Leningrad Mint. PCGS MS-64. An intense, radiating near-Gem, this brilliant minor would appear to be a bit conservatively graded. As is, it is tied with just seven others for the finest in the PCGS census. Compare to another PCGS MS-64, which realized a total of $1,140 in our May 2020 Hong Kong auction (lot 40246)." The second specimen was lot 51267 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[2] noted, "MONGOLIA. 50 Mongo, Year 15 (1925). Leningrad Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A charming piece, this example offers satiny luster under a light toning on the obverse, while it presents a delightful golden-sea foam green hue throughout the reverse." This issue, the first for the independent country, was accompanied by one, two, five, ten, fifteen, twenty mongo and one tugrik. All match the contemporary Russian kopeks and rubles. The Communists ruled the nation with Russian support until they were overthrown in 1992. This series has become expensive since it was included in Chinese catalogs.
