Ceylon 1904 1/4 cent

Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23329

This specimen was lot 23329 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $65. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CEYLON. 1/4 Cent, 1904. London Mint. PCGS MS-63 Red Brown Gold Shield. This coin was struck with a rusted obverse die that has diminished some detail on the bust, but otherwise the design is clear and the fields exhibit abundant mint red." This tiny coin is the last of its denomination issued for Ceylon. It was accompanied by a half cent and one cent. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 103,000 plus proofs plus a few struck in gold.
