This specimen was lot 33822 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $5,040. The lot description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Groningen & Ommeland. Provincial gold Off-Metal Duit 1677 AU Details (Removed from Jewelry). Butter gold and leaving an impression of visual balance and quality that renders this offering a highly collectible example of this off-metal type. Showcasing a pleasing level of preservation, we anticipate an elevated bidder response from the conditionally conscious collector. From the Coenen Collection." The province of Groningen & Ommelanden began minting duits in 1674. The circulation issue (KM 28) was copper while presentation strikes (KM 28a) dated 1674, 1675 and 1677 were made in gold. Duits were struck intermittently until 1692, then a few more in 1770-72. Groningen was the poorest province of the Netherlands and its coinage is the scantiest.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
