This specimen was lot 20320 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. Cent, 1885. NGC MS-64 RB. KEY DATE. The lowest mintage date in the entire series with only 40,000 struck and with most surviving examples heavily worn. The current NGC census suggests it is the finest graded, and the only piece seen that isn't brown. Mostly red, an impressive piece that is sure to capture the imagination of any collector of this Canadian province." This specimen is a scarce date of a type struck in London and Birmingham for the colony of Newfoundland 1865-96.
Recorded mintage: 40,000 plus proofs.
Specification: bronze.
