Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51212
SB124-51212 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51212 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1804-L. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC MS-60. A shimmery Mint State example of the date with crisp detail on each side. Only minor contact marks persist on the fields, and even these are largely subdued by the stormy gray tone. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which an example is shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-escabel, EMO-491 (Plate coin); KM-102.2; Cal-115.
