Sincona sale 64, lot 3233

This specimen was lot 3233 in Sincona sale 64 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$150 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Freiburg/Fribourg | Stadt und Kanton, Viertelgulden zu 14 Kreuzern 1788, Freiburg. Vorzüglich-FDC. (city and canton of Fribourg, quarter gulden of 14 kreuzer of 1788, Fribourg mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

In Fribourg, 56 kreuzer = one gulden, making this coin one quarter gulden. This type was struck 1787-93, 1797-98 and is fairly common. In 1798, the armies of Revolutionary France invaded Switzerland and the old confederation collapsed. The Helvetic Republic was set up and the cantons reorganized.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 2.52 g.

Catalog reference: KM 59, D.T. 651b, HMZ 2-274b.
