Heritage sale 3010, lot 21909

This specimen was lot 21909 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $3,737.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XIV gold Ducat 1827/6, MS64 NGC, superbly struck with every detail on the bust crisp and clear, full mint brilliance and totally blemish-free. A delight to behold." This type was struck in small numbers 1818-29 but enough were saved that it is comparatively affordable. Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.
