Künker sale 352, lot 2077

This specimen was lot 2077 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$26,442 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REGENSBURG, STADT, 2 Dukaten o. J. (1765-1790), mit Titel Josefs II. Stadtansicht, oben strahlender Name Jehovas//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Schwert, Zepter und Reichsapfel in den Fängen, auf der Brust Wappenschild. GOLD. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Erstabschlag, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben 1937 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. (Germany, city of Regensburg, undated double ducat, struck in the name of Joseph II. Obverse: city view under the glorious name of God; reverse: crowned doubled headed eagle with sword, scepter and orb in its claws and a shield on its breast. First strike, extremely fine to uncirculated. Rare, especially in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated. Bought from Julius Jenke in 1937.)"

Regensburg retained the quaint habit of not dating her coinage, to the annoyance of modern collectors. Half, three and five ducats exist with a city view design.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.00 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6,93 g.

Catalog reference: KM 391, Beckenb. 322, II; Fr-2554; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4862.
