Brazil 1847 10000 reis
This specimen was lot 1277 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $5175. The catalog description[1] noted, "1847 10,000 reis. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold with deeper highlights. Scarce in this grade. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1841-48 and tho denominated 10,000 réis, was the same size and weight as the colonial 6400 réis. In 1849, the 10000 réis was lowered to 8.96 g, where it remained until 1922. It is likely that the 1840's issues were melted down to strike the lighter coins as this type is now very rare.
Recorded mintage: 26,000 (most common date).
Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .422 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 14.31 grams, 28.00 mm diameter.
