Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1681 2/3 thaler KM-262.1

Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41327

This specimen was lot 41327 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 2/3 Taler, 1681. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August, as Bishop of Osnabruck. PCGS MS-61. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1680-93, is rather scarce in nice condition. Another two-thirds thaler exists with a leaping stallion design (KM 263). Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
