Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73841
SB223-73841r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73841 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $40. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISRAEL. 5 Lirot, 1960. Berne Mint. ANACS PROOF-65. A wholesome proof, this tremendous example yields a shimmering luster and wholesome details, with much retained charm on flan." Rapid inflation destroyed the value of the 1949 series and the coinage was reformed in 1960 to 100 agorot = one lira. This type did not circulate and was extensively saved. It accompanied a gold twenty lirot, also featuring Theodore Herzl (KM 30).

Recorded mintage: 34,281 plus 4,827 proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-29.
