SB223-73842r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73842 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISRAEL. 5 Lirot, JE 5721 (1961). Utrecht Mint. NGC PROOF-66. A tremendous proof, this brilliant and lustrous specimen delivers shimmering eye appeal and charm." Rapid inflation destroyed the value of the 1949 series and the coinage was reformed in 1960 to 100 agorot = one lira. This type did not circulate and was extensively saved.

Recorded mintage: 19,363 plus 4,455 proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 33.
