Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 4163

This specimen was lot 4163 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $481.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Madura Island. Ducaton, ND (1811-54). NGC AU-55. cf.KM-199.2. Countermarked on an 1752 Austria Taler." The Dutch hold on the East Indies at this point was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia. This counterstamp, applied by a local despot on Madura Island off Java, is found on various Dutch, Austrian and Mexican silver coins circulating in the area.
