This specimen was lot 42466 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "LIBERIA. Copper Cent Pattern, 1890. PCGS PROOF-64 Red Brown." Liberia, a poverty-stricken country on the west coast of Africa, has an underdeveloped economy with little need for coinage. Nevertheless, there is an extensive array of patterns and salesmen's samples struck at various foreign mints which have become popular among collectors. The spate of patterns from the 1890's finally resulted in the award of a contract to the Heaton mint in England for copper and silver coinage struck starting in 1896.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-Pn4.
