France 1768-A liard
This specimen was lot 1348 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it sold for 175 CHF (about US$217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH Louis XV. 1715-1774. Liard à la vieille tête 1768, Paris. Gutes vorzüglich. (France, Louis XV, 1715-74, liard 'of the old head' of 1768, Paris mint. Good extremely fine.)"
The specimen shown is a liard à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1768-71 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was 3 deniers, ¼ sol or 1/480 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens such as the one shown are scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common[2].
Specification: copper, 3.05 g, 21 mm diameter, plain edge. Engraved by Joseph-Charles Röettiers. This specimen is 2.94 g.
