from Sincona sale 11, lot 1348

This specimen was lot 1348 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it sold for 175 CHF (about US$217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XV. 1715-1774. Liard à la vieille tête 1768, Paris. Gutes vorzüglich. (France, Louis XV, 1715-74, liard 'of the old head' of 1768, Paris mint. Good extremely fine.)"

The specimen shown is a liard à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1768-71 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was 3 deniers, ¼ sol or 1/480 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens such as the one shown are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common[2].

Specification: copper, 3.05 g, 21 mm diameter, plain edge. Engraved by Joseph-Charles Röettiers. This specimen is 2.94 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 873, Dr/2 no. 581, KM 543.1, Duplessy 1701, Gad-272.
