Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands in 1949. Being a scattered series of islands with differing traditions, Indonesia has struggled to remain a cohesive nation, hampered by corruption on a colossal scale. The coin shown is a copper-nickel 50 rupiah featuring a Greater Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea apoda) on the reverse. It is a one-year type.
Recorded mintage: 1,035,850,000.
Specification: 6 g, copper-nickel, 24 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 35.
