Great Britain (1638-39) crown Fr-248
This specimen was lot 1127 in Sincona sale 79 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 3,600 CHF (about US$4,315 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. Gold crown of 5 shillings n. d. (1638-1639), Tower Mint under the King. Group E. Fifth small Aberystwyth bust, bust 8. Mintmark anchor with flukes to right/anchor upright. NGC AU58." Charles abandoned the laurel coinage of the latter part of James's reign and reverted to the old gold crown (five shillings), double crown (10 shillings) and unite (20 shillings). The early 1630's saw the resumption of experiments with milled coinage, which had been tried and abandoned in the reign of Elizabeth I.
