SB822-34428r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34428 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, ND (1538-42)-oMo G. Mexico City Mint. Carlos & Johanna. PCGS AU-58. The finest of just four observed at PCGS, this incredibly impressive near-Mint survivor offers a deep gray tone and rather sharp strike on each side, with very little in the way of handling noted, and some alluring hints of brilliance emanating from the protected areas. Undoubtedly one of the finest examples of the type extant, and worthy of a premium bid. Ex: Ponterio 146 (4/2008) Lot # 242." The early series of 1536-41 is rare in all denominations. They are marked by the rhombus around the "PLVS VLTR".
