This specimen was lot 13276 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $2,232. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Carlos & Johanna Series. 4 Reales, ND (1536)-R. Assayer R. Gothic M, Assayer Francisco del Rincon. Doubling on reverse. FINE." The "Carlos and Johanna" coinage of 1536-55 is complicated and difficult to disentangle as records are sparse and the coins are not dated. The early series of 1536-41 is rare in all denominations.
Recorded mintage: Unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.22 gms.
