Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 31266

This specimen was lot 31266 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $24,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Glistening East India Company 5 Guineas, GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1729-E.I.C Year TERTIO. London Mint. George II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. East India Company issue. Young head. Incredibly dazzling and nothing short of a treat to hold in one's hand, this East India Company 5 Guineas is uncommonly detailed, with no evidence of wear or circulation. Fully struck and entirely alluring, this example retains strong charm despite the noted cleaning by PCGS. Some hairlines and an unnatural brightness attest to the cleaning, though, given the demand and general SCARCITY of the type, this should not dissuade too many potential bidders. A more affordable--though still not inexpensive--example of the type, and, on these accounts, a good buy for those looking for a discount on difficult types. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." The 1729 five guineas comes with and without "EIC" below the bust; both are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 41.75 g, .917 fine gold, 1.230 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-3664; Fr-333; KM-571.2.
