Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1588 thaler Dav-9067
This specimen was lot 1089 in Sincona sale 22 (Zurich, May 2015), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum, Julius, 1568-1589 Taler 1588. Goslar Brillentaler. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Julius (1568-89), thaler of 1588, Goslar mint, good very fine.)"
This type was issued 1588-89 and is fairly common for the period. The "brillenthaler" nickname comes from what appears to be spectacles (brillen) below the skull in the wild man's hand. Several other thalers (Dav-9065 and -9066) have this nickname.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
