Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1351

This specimen was lot 1351 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR demi-écu Vertugadin, 1716D, Lyon. Réformation. D/ B. enfantin à d., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné. Rare Flan large. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver half écu Vertugadin of 1716, Lyon mint, reformed. Obverse: young bust right, draped and armored; reverse: crowned round arms of France. Rare, large planchet, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Droulers[2] notes that all known examples are struck "flan reformés," i.e., over earlier types. The type was struck until 1718, when it was replaced by the demi-écu de France et Navarre. It is priced lower than its sister, the écu vertugadin, tho much scarcer.
