Netherlands 1873 cent
This specimen was lot 72552 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Cent, 1873. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: sword. William III. NGC MS-66 Red Brown. A radiant and highly shimmering example, this alluring Gem offers tremendous originality through lustrous brilliance and an appealing high degree of red." This type is listed for 1860-64 and 1870-73. Except for the privy mark, it is identical to the cents struck for William I 1817-30 and 1837. At the time of issue, it had a face value of about two-fifths of a United States cent. The cent was redesigned, converted to bronze and reduced to 2.5 g in 1877 and struck in that form until 1941. This date is common in circulated condition.
