Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was gained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago rather than with other South American nations. The coin shown is a dollar. The obverse shows the coat of arms, the reverse shows a head of rice.
