Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was gained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago than with other South American nations. The coin shown is a five dollars in copper-plated steel. Obverse shows the coat of arms, reverse shows sugar cane with a metal tub commonly used for refining the pulp.
