Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was gained in 1966. The coin shown is a ten dollars in nickel-plated steel. The obverse shows the coat of arms, the reverse shows an itinerant miner or 'porknocker' as they are locally known, using a pan to determine the occurrence of gold flakes in a slurry of gold-bearing mud.
