from Goldberg sale 90, lot 3801
S Arabia G90-3801r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3801 in Goldberg sale 90 (Los Angeles, January 2016), where it sold for $340.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saudi Arabia. Guinea (Pound), AH1370 (1950). One year type. NGC graded MS-66." The stated mintage, if correct, must have represented virtually every gram of bullion in the kingdom, down to melted teeth and wedding rings. The oil bonanza which would make the Saudis rich beyond the dreams of avarice had not arrived in 1950. Altho catalogued in the SCWC as a guinea, the weight matches the sovereign.

Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.234 oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-36.
