This type was struck for the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1954. It followed a similar type (KM 16) struck in 1937 for Ibn Saud and was accompanied by silver half and one riyal coins. In 1963, the coinage was reformed so that 100 halala = one riyal and this coin became a 25 halala piece struck in copper-nickel.
