from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24522
New Zealand SB118-24522r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24522 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Auckland. Archibald Clark. Penny Token, 1857. NGC MS-63 BN. Rarity 4. Seated justice, date in exergue; Reverse: 'Shortland Street Auckland' within beaded boarder, 'Archibald Clark Draper' around. Well struck with somewhat mottled patina and a lovely blue sheen with hints of original mint red. Quite attractive. Sources state that these are believed to be the first tokens struck for New Zealand. From the James Heegeman Collection." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: copper, 34 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Andrews-64; Lampard-310; KM-TN12; Gray-42; Renniks-75.
