New Zealand (1857) penny token KM-Tn59
This specimen was lot 2001 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $416.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND: AE penny token, ND (1857), W. PETERSON / HIGH ST CHRISTCHURCH in outer margin, WATCHMAKER / AND / JEWELLER within inner circle, // ALL REPAIRS WELL EXECUTED around trophy, clock and watch at center, EVERYTHING SOLD GUARANTEED in outer legend, EF, R." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."
