This specimen was lot 24558 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Christchurch/Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, Queensland. Henry J. Hall/Flavelle Bros & Co. Penny Token Mule, ND (ca. 1857). NGC MS-64 BN. Rarity 9-10. EXTREMELY RARE especially so in this state of preservation. Emu left and Kangaroo right facing each other, tall thin foliage behind Kangaroo's tail, 'W.J. Taylor London' in exergue; Reverse: "One Penny" at center, 'Henry.J.Hall. Christchurch Coffee Mills' around. Sharply struck with excellent definition of the fine details. Lovely smooth chocolate patina throughout. From the James Heegeman Collection." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."
