Goldberg sale 69, lot 4680

This specimen was lot 4680 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $207. The catalog description ^[2] noted, "France. Franc, 1808-H. Napoleon I. Laureate head right. Toned. NGC graded AU-53." This was struck at La Rochelle under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck 1807-08. However, despite being in production for little over a year, more were made (11.8 million) than of the subsequent type (F.205) minted 1809-14 (10.0 million). It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog^[1] notes 16 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is slightly scarce.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
