This specimen was lot 30173 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1691-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS MS-63. A 'double wildmen' type, this choice Taler radiates originality and wholesomeness through its decided lack of wear, two-toned cabinet gray surfaces, and even shimmerings of brilliance evident when rotated back and forth. Very superior to that which is normally encountered for the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This is another in the long series of "wild man" thalers struck in Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This one is recorded for 1688-92 and is common.
