Sincona sale 97, lot 2022

This specimen was lot 2022 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$798 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz II. (I.), 1792-1835. 1/2 Sovrano 1793 V, Venedig. Sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis II (I), 1792-1835, half souverain d'or of 1793, Venice mint. Very Fine.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Similar coins are known from Vienna, Günzburg, Kremnitz, Brussels, Milan and Hall. The type was struck 1792-98 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa. This is the only issue with the "V" mintmark. The SCWC states this date was minted in 1823 at Günzburg.
