Spain 1664-Seg BR 4 maravedis
This specimen was lot 1172 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 75 € (about US$98 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1664. Felipe IV. Segovia. BR. 4 maravedis. A dot over the bust. Scarce especially in this condition. EBC [extremely fine]. Ex Isabel de Trastamara collection 05/25/2017, no. 607." The Spanish mints produced large quantities of copper coins during the reign of Philip III but ceased after his death in 1621, probably due to oversupply. Copper coinage resumed about 1660 and large quantities were struck, again leading to rejection by the populace. This product of the Segovia mint is noted for 1660-64. Other mints included Burgos, La Coruña, Granada, Madrid, Cuenca, Seville and Valladolid. Numista calls these billon but they were actually copper with a silver wash which is seen only on high grade survivors. The mintmark is an aqueduct.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.3 g, copper, this specimen 1.38 g.
