H61487-25197r.jpg

This specimen was lot 25197 in Heritage sale 61487 (Dallas, TX, May 2025), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. Charles III 2 Reales 1775 LM-MJ AU55 NGC, Lima mint. Gently handled yet decidedly attractive, showcasing iridescent-tinged residual luster to the peripheries. Accompanied by the original collector envelope. From the Monedero Collection of Peru and Latin American Coins." This specimen is one of a series struck 1772-89 during the reign of Charles III (1759-88). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about half as many Peruvian two reales of Charles III as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is common. The fineness was lowered from .903 to .896 in 1785.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver.
