Schaffhausen 1657 4 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3433 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Batzen 1657, Schaffhausen. Breiter Schrötling. Variante mit SCAFVSENSIS. Sehr schön. Knickspur. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, batzen of 1657, Schaffhausen mint, wide strike, variety with SCAFVSENSIS. Very fine, Bent.)"
The SCWC notes several varieties of batzen for 1657: KM 48 (23 mm), KM 49 (klippe), KM 50 (26 mm, shown here) and KM 51 (klippe). This type is listed for 1657-58, where it is not priced above Very Fine. One batzen = four kreuzer. The variety is likely the result of an engraving error as it should be spelled "SCHAFVSENSIS".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.03 g.
