Sedwick sale 25, lot 164

This specimen was lot 164 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, bust 1/2 escudo, Ferdinand VII, 1821JP, NGC AU 55. Good bold strike and nice luster, desirable final date of colonial issue. NGC #3834263-058." While eight escudos from Peru are reasonably available, the smaller gold denominations are all very scarce. Half escudos of Fernando VII were struck only in Mexico, Peru (shown here) and Spain; Lima produced this type 1814-21. The republicans issued half escudos 1826-29, 1833-42 and 1850-56.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16122, Fr-59, CT-358; KM-125.
