Papal States 1868 10 soldi rev DSLR.jpg

This type is known for 1866-68 and is common. Several varieties exist (KM 1386.1 and 1386.2) as well as issues for regnal year XXIII. The pope was enjoying his last days as an independent potentate; when French troops left in 1870, Italian troops marched in and forcibly unified Rome with the rest of the kingdom of Italy. Coinage resumed in 1929 in the name of the Vatican. Ten soldi equaled half a lira.

Recorded mintage: 8,200,000.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .067 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 1376, Ber-3343.
