Papal States 1698 piastra Dav-4107
The first coin was lot 9468 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, 1698/Year VIII. Innocent XI (1676-89). St. Peter blessing crowd. Struck for the first anniversary of the Peace of Ryswick. Nice grade for type. Lovely original toning. NGC AU-55." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue is among the more available. Innocent XII (not Innocent XI as listed in the catalog description) ruled 1691-1700.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.07 g, 0.917 fine silver.
