Burgau 1765-G SC 1/2 thaler
The first specimen was lot 1631 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €360 (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1765, G, Günzburg. Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention half thaler of 1765, Günzburg mint. about extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1634 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €400 (about US$518 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR demi-Taler, 1765 SC/G, Günzburg. D/ B. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Eypeltauer 86. Nettoyé. Petits coups au droit. Superbe. (Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver half thaler of 1765, Gunzburg mint. Obverse; bust right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Cleaned, minor nicks on the obverse, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1764-65 in the Austrian enclave of Burgau near Augsburg. It was accompanied by a thaler (Dav-1147). Napoleon seized the territory and handed it over to Bavaria about 1806.
