Sincona sale 63, lot 3472

This specimen was lot 3472 in Sincona sale 64 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,256 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Obwalden | misc, Kreuzer 1726, Sarnen. Ovales Obwaldnerwappen in einer Kartusche. ¬ MONETA NOVA ¬ 17 ¬ 26. Rv. Doppeladler, darüber eine Krone. Auf der Adlerbrust in einem Oval die Wertzahl 1. REIP SVB SVPERIOR. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (half canton of Obwalden, kreuzer of 1726, Sarnen mint. Obverse: oval arms in cartouche. Reverse: double headed eagle, crown above, value on eagle's breast. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. Unterwalden was divided into the "half cantons" of Obwalden and Nidwalden. This type was struck 1725-29 and is not listed in the SCWC in better than Very Fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 0.74 g.

Catalog reference: KM 7, D.T. 623b, HMZ 2-739c (plate coin).
