Jean Elsen sale 110, lot 1197
France 1726O ecu rev JElsen 110-1197.jpg

This specimen was lot 1197 in Jean Elsen sale 110 (Brussels, September 2011) where it sold for € 115 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE ROYALE, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1726 O, Riom. Droit : B. habillé à gauche, décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Ref.: Très Beau. (Kingdom of France, Louis XV, silver écu with olive branches of 1726, Riom mint. Obverse: uniformed bust to left, wearing the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Very Fine.)"

Most Riom mint issues are rare but this one is fairly common. Droulers reports 1726-28, 1730-1740 from this mint. The mint closed in 1765. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 683,057.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, this specimen 29,23 g.

Catalog reference: KM 486.15, Dav-1330, Dr/4 № 819, Dr/2 № 579, Dupl., 1675; Ci., 2117; Gad., 321.
