Munster 1790 pfenning
This specimen was lot 552 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$9,204 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, DOMKAPITEL Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Ku.-Pfennigs 1790. MÜNSTER : / DOM / CAPITUL//I / PFENNING / 1790. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Kl. Bearbeitungsstelle am Rand (Henkelspur), vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, cathedral chapter, pfennig of 1790, struck in gold. Obverse: inscription; reverse: value and date. Extremely rare, a little tooling on the edge, extremely fine.)"
In addition to the one pfenning shown here (KM 450), the canons also struck a two pfenning (KM 451), a four pfenning (KM 446) and a six pfenning (KM 447) in 1790. The SCWC does not mention the gold off-metal strike. Numista shows an off-metal strike in silver (N#267220).
