Sincona sale 69, lot 848

This specimen was lot 848 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,451 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Groningen, Provinz. 14 Gulden 1761. Goldener Reiter - Gouden rijder. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS62. Leicht justiert. (Netherlands, province of Groningen, Rare, especially in this condition, Minor adjustment marks.)"

The province of Groningen issued few coins in the 18th century. Duits, stuivers, seven and 14 gulden were issued. This type, called a "gold rider", was struck in Gelderland under contract in 1761 only. Despite the short span of issue, all seven of the United Provinces issued this type and it remained popular for a long time.

Recorded mintage: 186,125 (including KM 60).

Specification: 9.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 9.94 g.

Catalog reference: KM 61 (listed under Groningen & Ommeland), Delmonte 1161 (R). Fr-244.
