Peru 1717-L M 2 reales
This specimen was lot 1873 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales, 1717 M, ex-Ponte. Scarce date, about Very Good with high points flat from circulation yet with nice details including full pillars and cross plus two visible dates, plugged hole above right pillar. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." Two reales of this type were struck through the reign of Philip V. Assayer M stamped his coins 1709-27. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. In 1728, the silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine with no change in design. The mintage of gold commenced in 1696.
