SB1024-72109r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72109 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 2 Reales, 1668-P E. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS EF-40. A moderately struck Cob with dark toning in the fields and some weak patches on both sides. Mintmark and assayer information is clear on the obverse, and the date appears twice, once with all four digits. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." In 1652, the four and eight reales were redesigned to distinguish the reformed (full silver) product from the old, debased cobs. Assayer "E" (Antonio de Ergueta) was brought in to clean house and served 1650-79, well into the reign of Charles II, as here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 5.74 g.

Catalog reference: KM-24; Cal-385; Cayón-limonite.
