Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1094
SB924-1094r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1094 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €78,000 (about US$86,440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Impressive Prooflike 2 Ducats of 1670, DENMARK. 2 Ducats, 1670. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-62 Prooflike. Mintmaster: Gotfred Krüger (GK). EXTREMELY RARE. The mirror-like fields and the frosty finish of the devices combine to reach a prooflike grading which is normally quite unobtainable for a coin of this period.

Whereas numerous bust styles were traditionally executed during the reign of king, this extraordinarily beautiful Double-Ducat with the elegant quadruple double monogram on the reverse depicts the Roman-inspired laureate head of the king. It became the last portrait of the king, who died on the 9th of February 1670. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)."

Other gold coins of 1670 included a three mark (Fr-130) and a single ducat (Fr-109).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.875 fine gold, 30.5 mm diameter, this specimen 6.95 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-95; KM-326; Hede-38; Sieg-138; Schou-1; Aagaard-65.1; Bruun-6728.
